Great Taste Awards 2014
Every year I scour the results, looking for names I recognise. Because I know most of our product producers personally, I love to see their names on the list as I know what a big deal this event is for them. To win a star means their product has been independently recognised as tasting great. And to win the top accolade of three stars, well that is pretty much as good as it gets!
For the last seven years I have been writing a blog post to list all our winners (you can still read them all: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 (part one and part two) and 2013). As much as I love seeing more and more of the products we stock being given Great Taste Awards, my job of list making gets harder each year! This year I started early and pinned a few winners every day to our 2014 Great Taste Award Winners pinterest board. But it has still taken me until November to write the full list, and it is basically just a list, but even so took me an entire day to write. But here it its. More than seventy award winning products I believe! Well done everyone!
*** 3 stars
Out of 10,000 products entered this year and just 123 were awarded the highest accolade of three stars.
One of these went to the Blaisdon Red Plum Jam from The Artisan Kitchen. Here are some of judges' the comments:
- Lovely deep ruby colour and sheen, a good set, and fruity aroma. A delicious jam with deep dark flavours and a hint of tartness.
- Nice to find a jam that tastes of fruit not sugar.
- It was very well cooked, the aroma was fresh. A jam with a variety of uses.
- This is an old fashioned fruit jam, the plum comes through uncluttered with additives or over powering sugar.
- Flies the flag for doing the simple things very, very well.
- There's a lovely set to this jam and the plum flavours carry great balancing acidity and tartness.
- A well made jam with a distinct, pronounced plum flavour.
Wedderspoon Organic also received three gold stars this year. For their incredible Wild Rata Honey. Judges' comments included:
- An utterly gorgeous honey
- This honey tastes amazing!
- Winnie the Pooh would choose this honey for his pot. it is delicious, smooth, sweet, floral with a little pine-iness on the back taste giving it a clean bright flavour
The coconut kitchen were awarded a fantastic three stars for their Easy Thai Green Curry Paste. Judges' comments included:
- It has a good deep flavour profile.
- Great umami hit of fish sauce that has been balanced against the other flavours very well.
Azada were awarded three stars for their virgin almond oil for the second consecutive year!
** 2 stars
There were 697 two star awards given out this year. This included Mike's Smokehouse Manuka Smoked Salmon which we've been stocking since we opened and it's still a favourite.

Great Taste Awards Revisited
When I wrote my blog entry about the 2012 Great Taste Awards I intended to add a photo collage of all the winners we stock. I realised it might take me a while, so I published the post with the intention of returning to it later to add the photographs. Twelve months, and forty blog posts, later, and I've still not produced the collage. So I wrote a post about the 2013 award winners. And again I thought a nice collage would be a good idea. For a couple of weeks I really thought I would return to it and add photographs. I really did! But it gradually dawned on me that was not going to happen. I then had another idea. Pinterest! I could make a pinterest board of all our award winners. It still took ages to gather together the images, but I didn't have to worry about the sizes and layout. So here it is, our Great Taste Award Winners 2013!

Chocolate Week
This week is chocolate week and what better time for us to start stocking "probably the best Chocolate in the world".Ben Tre chocolate took an amazing 3 gold stars (the highest accolade) at the Great Taste Awards this year. The cocoa is grown by a co-operative in southern Vietnam, the unrefined sugar is grown on a family-owned plantation in Peru and the transformation from bean to chocolate takes place at an old-style third generation chocolatier in Avignon, France, using a recipe created by artisan chocolatier Marc Demarquette. It is pretty special chocolate!
To celebrate the success of this 2010 vintage bean, two limited edition bars have been produced. A dark chocolate bar (70%, and dairy free) and a milk chocolate bar (40%). The bars have a wonderful aroma, are richly flavoured and slightly spicy, melt slowly and leave a smooth after taste. And not only that, but they are raising money for Action Against Hunger as well! Action Against Hunger is an international organisation that specialises in feeding starving children. £1 from every bar sold goes to help Action Against Hunger continue their valuable work.
“This chocolate bar benefits everyone from the sustainable, small-scale producers in Vietnam to the five million people Action Against Hunger supports each year. We encourage all food lovers to make a difference by purchasing this very special product,” said Heidi Drummond from Action Against Hunger.

I can mention Thanks Giving though?
I'm not going to mention Christmas again for a while, but I do need to talk about Thanks Giving. I am very pleased to say that this year we will have Libby's Canned Pumpkin in stock. I have been promised that it is on a boat at this very moment and should arrive here next week! And to further delight our North American customers, we will have some Turkeys available for Thanks Giving as well. I am mentioning it now, as the Turkeys will only be available if ordered before the end of October. They will come from the same flock as our Christmas Turkeys; those pampered, free-range, birds currently frolicking in the cherry orchards and grass meadows over in Cookham. If you’d like to order a locally reared, Two Gold Star Great Taste Award winning, Thanks Giving bird, please get in touch.

The Dairy House won two awards for their yoghurts, Trioni for their Strawberry milkshake and Patchwork for their handmade pates. Mike's Smokehouse won another award for their Hot Roast Salmon.

Great Taste Awards
A few weeks ago I was invited to be a judge at this year’s Great Taste Awards and on Friday I left the shop for the first time and travelled down to London for the tasting. I was very pleased to be allocated ice cream with nuts, fruit cake with alcohol and plain chocolate, a little dubious about bacon and hot chutney and not terribly keen on meat based pies. But it was the pies, which really surprised me. One was amazing! Not like any pie I had seen or eaten before and totally delicious. I now need to track it down, maybe not to stock in the shop, but certainly to eat myself.
